The Vocative Particle يا
By the end of Alif Baa's first lesson, you should be able to read and write the vocative particle يا, meaning "O," as in "O Ahmed." (In the next lesson of Alif Baa, you will learn that, in addition to being the long vowel ii, ي can also be pronounced y; hence يا is pronounced yaa.)
Since Alif Baa teaches you to write باب in Unit one, and with يا under your belt as well, you already know how to read and write two words in Arabic. Congratulations!
There are six instances of يا in the dialogues. One in Dialogue A, none in Dialogue B, three in Dialogue C, and two in Dialogue D.
Following are the Arabic texts for all of the dialogues you listened to in this unit. Skim through the lines of Arabic text
and count all the instances of يا that you see. How many did you find?
