Grammar Note 4

Numbers 3-10: Yin/Yang Rule - العَدَد والمَعدود

To read after the presentation of numbers 3-10 on AK pages 112-113.

In Arabic, an important point to remember about numbers from 3 to 10 is that the noun they take is always in the plural. Equally important is that the gender of the number is always opposite to that of the singular form of the noun being counted. Think of this as the yin-yang rule of Arabic numbers, i.e., when the noun is feminine, the number has to be masculine and vice versa. This rule is useful to remember because it is applicable to higher numbers as well.

(Please note the typo in AK page 113. The answer to the question بكم كيلو اللحم؟ should have been بثلاثة دولارات because دولار is masculine and therefore the number needs to be in the feminine ثلاثة. This is a very common grammatical error that does not affect meaning.)

Now practice counting things in Arabic by listening and repeating the counted masculine and feminine items below.
