Taha Hussein طه حسين was a famous Arabic literary scholar and author, and was a figurehead in Egypt's modernist movement. When he was three, he became blinde after contracting an eye infection. Despite his blindness, Taha Hussein distinguished himself by maintaining a controversial and independent position in critiquing traditional thought and literature. His book, «في الشعر الجاهلي» On Pre-Islamic Poetry, is an example of his strong controversial thought. One of Taha Hussein's greatest contributions to Egypt came as he served as minister of education and fought for free public education, declaring that "knowledge is like water and air."
